Lakehead University Music Program Helps Improves Quality of Life for Residents in Long-Term Care Homes
Eleven students enrolled in Lakehead University’s Department of Music course, Creative Community Engagements in Music, have the unique opportunity to apply their knowledge to create a program for residents in two local long-term care homes. Students and instructors Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans and Professor Lise Vaugeois, are working closely with the staff at St. Joseph’s Care Group at Bethammi Nursing Home and Hogarth Riverview Manor to organize music activities with residents. Music has been shown to improve the quality of life for residents of long term care homes and programming is being offered in groups and on an individual basis. [Read more] December 4, 2011

Canadian Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care Report Released
The report entitled "Not to be Forgotten: Care of Vulnerable Canadians" stresses the need for pro-active measures to make end-of-life care available across Canada. It offers several recommendations for improving palliative end-of-life care, suicide prevention, and elder abuse. Dr. Mary Lou Kelley Recognized Nationally for Palliative Care Work
The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) announced at its annual conference last Friday evening in St. John's, Newfoundland, that Dr. Mary Lou Kelley is the recipient of the 2011 Award of Excellence in Hospice Palliative Care. Dr. Kelley is a pioneering and dedicated professor of social work at Lakehead University and an internationally recognized palliative care researcher. [Read more] September 12, 2011

CERAH Announces ORC Early Researcher Awards!
The Ontario Research Coalition of Research Institutes / Centres on Health & Aging (ORC) brings together seven key research institutes in Ontario who work on producing evidence that could help to improve the quality of care provided to seniors in Ontario. CERAH is one of seven research institutes/centres on Health and Aging in Ontario and as a partner in the coalition, receives funding to offer one or more Early Researcher Awards. Call for Proposals: The Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH) at Lakehead University offers $10,000 Early Researcher Award for 2011-2012
CERAH is currently posting a call for proposals for an Early Researcher Award for September 2011. This award is for new and existing graduate and PhD students who are/will be focusing on research topics realting to: chronic disease; aging at home; drug usage / patient safety; or mobility and aging. As an ORC member, CERAH will support students with a $10,000 Early Researcher Award for the September 1, 2011 – April 30, 2012 period. This award can be used to provide salary support for the Early Researcher or be used to offset the cost of conducting research (research assistant support, data collection, etc.). Up to three awards may be offered to Early Researchers. The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 16, 2011. [Read more] March 25, 2011
