SUMMARY:CERAH Speaker Series with Maaja Sepa
DESCRIPTION:Title:\nThe family picture: A collection of family case studies exploring roles\, relationships\, and identities after a dementia diagnosis and a transition into a long-term care home\n\n\nSession Info:\nResearch exploring the lived experiences of people living with dementia and family members is often overlooked. This study discusses the meaning of family after a transition into a long-term care home and the construct of family at the family and individual levels. This study aimed to explore changes in roles\, relationships\, and identities within and between families along their dementia journeys. The families featured in this study experienced disruptions and transformations of roles\, relationships\, and identities after a family member living with dementia moved into a long-term care home. Both positive and negative changes were described\, which illustrated that dementia was not always a disruptor towards the negative\, but a disruptor toward something new and transformed. \nSpeaker Bio:\nMaaja Sepa\, MHSc\, Specialization in Gerontology\, BSc\nMaaja Sepa holds a Master’s degree in Health Sciences with a specialization in Gerontology from Lakehead University and a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph. She works closely with the North West Dementia Working Group and Dementia Café: A Place to Belong\, advocating for meaningful engagement and community support for people living with dementia and their families. Under the supervision of Dr. Elaine Wiersma\, Maaja’s research examined the evolving roles\, relationships\, and identities of people living with dementia and their families following diagnosis and transition into a long-term care home. \nMaaja’s commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults in Northwestern Ontario is rooted in her close bond with her grandmothers. These relationships inspired her lifelong dedication to fostering age-inclusive communities and promoting dignity and belonging for older adults. \nREGISTER FOR THIS FREE WEBINAR BY CLICKING HERE

SUMMARY:Disenfranchised Grief: Exploring the Importance of Spiritual Processing for Culturally Diverse Personal Support Workers in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Session Info:\nExploring the often-overlooked grief experiences of culturally diverse PSWs in long-term care homes\, this presentation contributes to filling a gap in grief research by centering the voices of PSWs and advocating for a cultural shift in long-term care—normalizing grief discussions\, reducing stigma\, and developing policies and practices that strengthen staff well-being\, resilience\, and retention. PSWs form close bonds with residents yet receive little recognition or structured support when residents die\, underscoring the urgent need to explore the themes of: the invisible emotional burden of repeated loss\, reliance on peer and spiritual coping strategies\, the influence of cultural identity on grief expression\, and the impact of unsupported grief on job satisfaction and retention. Grief needs to be acknowledged as part of PSWs’ professional reality\, and for culturally and spiritually responsive supports to be implemented. \nSpeaker Bio:\nKC Woilford is a registered Social Worker from Northern Ontario\, currently completing a Master of Social Work with a specialization in Gerontology at Lakehead University. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Social Work and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Gerontology\, both with distinction. KC’s professional focus is in long-term care\, palliative care\, and dementia care\, where she coaches Gentle Persuasive Approaches and has completed advanced certifications in cultural safety\, dementia care\, palliative care\, and leadership. \n\nHer research\, supervised by Dr. Jo Ann Vis\, examines disenfranchised grief among Personal Support Workers in long-term care\, highlighting how unsupported grief impacts well-being\, job satisfaction\, and retention. \nDeeply committed to culturally safe and person-centred care\, KC acknowledges her work and learning take place on the traditional lands of Fort William First Nation\, signatory to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850. She aims to influence workplace culture and policy to better support frontline caregivers\, reduce psychological injury\, and strengthen resident care. \n\nTo register for this free CERAH Speaker Series\, please click HERE.
