DESCRIPTION:Title:\nThe family picture: A collection of family case studies exploring roles\, relationships\, and identities after a dementia diagnosis and a transition into a long-term care home\n\n\nSession Info:\nResearch exploring the lived experiences of people living with dementia and family members is often overlooked. This study discusses the meaning of family after a transition into a long-term care home and the construct of family at the family and individual levels. This study aimed to explore changes in roles\, relationships\, and identities within and between families along their dementia journeys. The families featured in this study experienced disruptions and transformations of roles\, relationships\, and identities after a family member living with dementia moved into a long-term care home. Both positive and negative changes were described\, which illustrated that dementia was not always a disruptor towards the negative\, but a disruptor toward something new and transformed. \nSpeaker Bio:\nMaaja Sepa\, MHSc\, Specialization in Gerontology\, BSc\nMaaja Sepa holds a Master’s degree in Health Sciences with a specialization in Gerontology from Lakehead University and a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph. She works closely with the North West Dementia Working Group and Dementia Café: A Place to Belong\, advocating for meaningful engagement and community support for people living with dementia and their families. Under the supervision of Dr. Elaine Wiersma\, Maaja’s research examined the evolving roles\, relationships\, and identities of people living with dementia and their families following diagnosis and transition into a long-term care home. \nMaaja’s commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults in Northwestern Ontario is rooted in her close bond with her grandmothers. DESCRIPTION:The Northwest Grief & Bereavement Community of Practice Presents:\nPregnancy & Infant Loss: Awareness Matters with Loralee McInroy & Brandon Drouilliard\nKey Audience: Health Care Providers & Community Supports\nWhen:\nMarch 12\, 2026 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM ET\nSession Info:\n\n\nPregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) Network is a provincially funded organization with a mandate to provide bereavement support at no cost to families in Ontario who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy at any stage\, or the death of their baby\, up to 12 months of age. We welcome any families who have suffered a pregnancy or infant death to join with others who share in their grief. PAIL Network is very proud to be able to offer this free service and we are grateful to the many volunteers around the province who share their hearts with bereaved families\, like their own. \nWe are pleased to offer this presentation for health care professionals and community supports to learn more about PAIL Network\, with information about our Family Support Program\, our Education for Professionals\, and how health care professionals can refer families for support. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will further develop their knowledge about the impact that pregnancy and infant loss can have on people who have experienced this type of bereavement\nParticipants will increase their ability to provide skilled and compassionate care and services to people who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss\nParticipants will learn basic strategies for compassionate communication\nParticipants will learn more about Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) Network and be able to find information to share with people who may benefit from resources and programs provided by PAIL Network\n\n\nJoin us for a discussion and exploration of how to acknowledge and support this loss and grief journey.\n\nSpeaker Bios:\nLoralee McInroy \nLoralee became a volunteer with the PAIL Network in 2015\, where she began facilitating her local circle of support. In 2018\, she joined the PAIL Network staff as the South Eastern Regional Representative. Most recently\, she has taken on the role of Family Support Coordinator\, where she finds fulfillment in helping families navigate their loss. When she’s not assisting families\, she enjoys going on adventures with her husband and two living children. \nBrandon Drouilliard \nBrandon was first introduced to the PAIL Network in February 2019 shortly after his daughter Hannah’s neonatal death. After participating in peer support groups\, Brandon began volunteering as a family panelist sharing his lived experience as the non-birthing parent. \n\nIn the Fall of 2021\, Brandon then transitioned into his new role as a PAIL Educator\, where he has had the privilege of traveling the province facilitating Compassionate Care Workshops. In 2024\, Brandon began supporting the Education Team in the coordination and planning of educational workshops as PAIL Network’s Education Coordinator. \n\nBrandon lives in the Peterborough area with his wife Sarah\, their daughter Olivia\, and their Morkie\, Stella.
