Lakehead Researchers Plenary Speakers at International Alzheimer Conference

Dr. Mary Lou Kelley, Professor, Department of Social Work, and Dr. Elaine Wiersma, Assistant Professor, Master of Public Health, were invited as plenary speakers to the 26th International Conference of Alzheimer's Disease that attracted over 1100 attendees from around the world.

At the conference from March 26 - 29, Dr. Wiersma presented It's managing yourself to give yourself the best that life can give you: Self-management of dementia, and Dr. Kelley presented Itís hard to watch people die for a living: Improving Palliative Care in Long-Term Care Homes. Dr. Wiersma also presented two scientific abstracts, The Context of Dementia in Rural Northern Communities in Ontario and Exploring Perceptions of Self-Management of Dementia.

A local community member, Bill Heibein, joined Dr. Wiersma in Toronto at the live event for the international A Changing Melody Forum, a learning and sharing forum for persons with early-stage dementia and their partners in care, as a precursor to the International Conference of Alzheimer's Disease.
