Indigenous peoples possess deep cultural knowledge for caring for those who are preparing to journey to the spirit world. However, settler-colonialism disrupted the passing down of this knowledge by imposing Western healthcare systems that invalidated traditional practices. To improve more equitable and positive outcomes for Indigenous peoples, Indigenous peoples must lead the way forward in re-claiming Indigenous Knowledges for caring for people at the end of life.
This presentation shares caregiving practices from Indigenous Elders that can be re-activated to support community members at the end of life.
