A Culturally Humble Approach to Palliative Care with Rami Shami

December 11 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Session Info:

With the incredible diversity of peoples that span our regions, and the progressive domains with which diversity is defined today, we cannot continue to categorize people into boxes when we are engaging and serving them. The models of Cultural Competence and Cultural Sensitivity are antiquated and lacking in an aspect of individual expression and identity that can only be represented within the scope of ‘Personal Culture’.

Through the utility of a Culturally Humble approach, we become the learner of another, and position ourselves to receive from them how they self-define within their own identity, influences, and self-expressions. This scope of service aligns with the foundational principles of Palliative Care and has become the gold standard for the provision of truly person-centred care.

In this seminar we will:

  • Explore what is Cultural Humility and how it differs from Cultural Sensitivity/Competence
  • How to apply a Culturally Humble approach within any domains of Palliative Care
  • Learn what is Personal Culture and how we can become the learner of another we are engaging and/or serving
